​When I first came across Tongkat Ali, it was through an article that asked…

“Would you pass the morning wood test as a man over 40?”

This question made me pause and think. I wasn’t sure if I was passing this test consistently, and it prompted me to investigate further.

I read more about Tongkat Ali, and found out it’s a traditional herb native to Southeast Asia. I also discovered that it contains natural adaptogenic properties from its bioactive ingredients, such as eurycomanone, eurypeptides, alkaloids, and quassinoids. These are reported to influence testosterone levels.

The potential benefits were enormous, and the supplement seemed relatively cheap. So, I thought to myself, “This is either another fake supplement, hyped up big time. Or it could become my new go-to, tried and trusted, can’t-do-without supplement.”

Intrigued by the possibility of boosting my testosterone levels naturally, I decided to give Tongkat Ali a run for its money.

I chose AKARALI Tongkat Ali, a high-quality, standardized extract, and began my experiment.

To my surprise and delight, after just two days of taking the supplement, I woke up with the confirmation that I was definitely on to a winner. Without going into too much detail, Tongkat Ali helped me pass the morning wood experiment with flying colours.

Now, along with whey protein and creatine, Tongkat Ali has become one of those supplements I cannot live without.

My personal experience with this herb has been nothing short of remarkable, and I want to share my findings with you.

​The Science Behind The Testosterone-Boosting Properties

Previous randomized clinical studies have shown mild-to-significant effects of Tongkat Ali on increasing testosterone levels. It seems to depend on factors such as the type of extract used (standardized vs. non-standardized). The Tongkat Ali species. Purity. Current health condition. And baseline testosterone levels.

A 2024 study published in the Tropical Journal of Natural Product Research found that three species of Tongkat Ali extracts (Yellow, Black, and Red) increased testosterone secretion by 56.02 nmol/L (41.1%), 40.49 nmol/L (18.65%), and 36.99 nmol/L (10.93%), respectively. This highlights the potential of this herb as a natural testosterone booster.

It is important to note that Tongkat Ali is not classified as a steroid or a selective androgen modulator (SARM). These are compounds with anabolic properties similar to steroids.

Instead, Tongkat Ali works by naturally stimulating the body’s production of testosterone through its unique blend of bioactive compounds.

​Factors Influencing Tongkat Ali ’s Effectiveness

Tongkat Ali seems to have positive effects on increasing testosterone in individuals diagnosed with low androgen levels or older men with sedentary or active lifestyles.

Combining Tongkat Ali supplementation (400mg) with regular high-intensity exercises like GTW training has been shown to increase the likelihood of a moderate-to-significant increase in testosterone levels.

A 2022 systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials (RCTs) on humans provided compelling evidence of Tongkat Ali’s effects on increasing total testosterone, free usable testosterone, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), and dihydrotestosterone (DHT).

However, the effectiveness of Tongkat Ali in boosting testosterone may be reduced if the extract contains less than 0.5% eurycomanone or less than 20% eurypeptides.

As in most cases, to get the best results, you should choose a high-quality, standardized Tongkat Ali extract with optimal levels of these key bioactive ingredients.

​How This Herb Increases Testosterone Levels

Tongkat Ali increases usable testosterone (free testosterone) by reducing Sex Hormone Globulin (SHBG) and activating the adrenal gland to produce more total testosterone.

Clinical studies and research have shown that Tongkat Ali raises total testosterone, free testosterone, DHEA, DHT, and progesterone in the body.

The extent of testosterone increase from Tongkat Ali supplementation largely depends on age, health conditions, and lifestyle factors. And combining Tongkat Ali with multivitamins, zinc, boron, and high-intensity muscle-building training may lead to higher testosterone gains over a longer period.

Clinical trials and research studies have reported that Tongkat Ali raises free testosterone between 15% to 600% particularly when using a standardized hot-water Tongkat Ali root extract.

A placebo-controlled clinical trial using 50mg Physta® Tongkat Ali with multivitamins showed a 582% increase (from 1.67 ng/dL to 11.4 ng/dL) and a 600% increase (from 0.15 ng/dL to 1.05 ng/dL) of free testosterone in men and women, respectively, after 24 weeks.

Tongkat Ali’s Mechanism of Action

Tongkat Ali’s mechanism of action involves its bioactive ingredient, eurycomanone, which activates the adrenal and pituitary glands via the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis.

This process reduces SHBG, producing more usable free testosterone, and activates DHEA in the adrenal gland to produce more testosterone.

Two studies confirm this mechanism. First, a 2021 study showing increased free testosterone levels due to greater hormone production via the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. And second, a clinical trial involving 105 men aged 50–70 years. This study reported an increase in DHEA after 12 weeks of daily consumption of 200mg Tongkat Ali root extract.

​Benefits of Increased Free Testosterone

Tongkat Ali’s effects on increasing free testosterone can improve libido, mood, protein synthesis for muscle growth, and fat burning.

The first human clinical study on testosterone, published in 2012, showed promising results from Tongkat Ali supplementation.

And over 300 research studies in the last two decades have established Tongkat Ali as the herb with the most evidence supporting its testosterone-boosting properties.

​The Effects on Different Age Groups

In men between 40 and 47, a 2020 randomized controlled study conducted by researchers from the University of Santarina, Brazil, reported that consuming 200mg Tongkat Ali daily along with exercising three days per week resulted in the most significant testosterone increase over a 6-month period.

Two independent clinical studies conducted in 2014 and 2021 demonstrated Tongkat Ali’s ability to increase testosterone in men above 50 years.

The first study involved 105 men aged 50–70 years and showed significant improvement in testosterone compared to a placebo-controlled group.

The second study, with 13 males aged 57–72 years, showed a 61% improvement in testosterone over a 5-week period when consuming 400mg of Tongkat Ali daily.

Expert Recommendations and Choosing The Right Supplement

Experts like award-winning professor, and famous Youtuber, Dr. Andrew Huberman suggest that consuming 400mg of Tongkat Ali daily can increase testosterone levels by 100 to 200 points.

However, the effectiveness of Tongkat Ali supplements in boosting testosterone is attributed to a range of factors such as potency, purity, and extraction technology (e.g., hot water extract vs. ethanol-based extract).

Clinically tested Tongkat Ali, such as AKARALI Physta, may increase the likelihood of boosting testosterone compared to generic lab-tested Tongkat Ali supplements.

Final Thoughts On Tongkat Ali Increasing Testosterone

In conclusion, my personal experience with Tongkat Ali, combined with decades of clinical studies on humans and animals, has shown that this herb has a strong potential to elevate testosterone levels. This is particularly true in middle-aged adults, seniors, and those diagnosed with premature aging hormones.

Choosing a standardized, pure root extract that is 3rd party lab-tested, like Yellow Tongkat Ali (Eurycoma Longifolia), may provide the highest and most consistent testosterone gains.
