Make sure you're getting enough zinc if you're over 40

I’m pretty sure that when your birthday rolls around, it’s not too much of a big deal anymore. Your life is probably way too busy to think about celebrating your birthday with cake and candles. You’ve probably got a mortgage to think about, a career or boss that takes up a huge amount of your time, and of course having kids is a massive responsibility.

But every guy in our age group, over 40s men, know that taking care of ourselves is more important than ever.

I’ve discussed the problems with declining testosterone for guys our age, and the potential issues if we don’t do something about it in a post I wrote a few days ago. If you missed it, you can grab in on this link:

Well, today’s post is all about the importance of zinc for over 40s men.

Ok, let’s dive in…

Why is zinc so important for over 40s men?

Zinc is a vital mineral for your body to function correctly. It is found in every cell, as it’s necessary for replicating all the cell’s genetic material. Did you know that zinc is involved in the production of as many as 300 enzymes and helps in hundreds of body processes, from healing your wounds to helping you digest foods?

You might not know that your body doesn’t produce zinc, and you most likely need to take a supplement.

And although zinc makes its mark by boosting immune functions, helping the growth and development of healthy cells, and slowing the progression of our eye quality as we get older, zinc is particularly important for guys. The suggested daily amount of zinc for adult men is 11 mg daily, as zinc plays a vital part in the production of testosterone, and improves fertility potency.

Zinc and cell repair

If you’ve joined the GTW Health and Fitness Lifestyle Program, or on another high-intensity program you’ll put extra pressure on your muscle system. Our muscles contain zinc deposits, where they are involved in the cell rebuilding process, which is especially helpful after you’ve been training hard.

GTW Health and Fitness Lifestyle Program-primer-level

Strenuous bodyweight training and weight training put pressure on your muscles when you use them. Your goal is to literally break the muscles at the cellular level. When you’re recovering, your muscles become large and strong. Zinc is an important part of this process, ranging from providing the right structure to your cells and proteins to help you get stronger.

In addition, muscles expend a lot of energy when you’re training, producing free radicals. Intense training can result in excessive sweating and insufficient calories, which can cause inadequate levels of zinc. Hence zinc plays a role as an antioxidant and helps reduce the negative effects of harmful free radicals. If you want to develop a strong immune system, you should be careful about their intake of zinc to ensure you maintain the right level.

Can Zinc reduce cold symptoms?

Feeling like you have ‘Run out of gas’? Like you could come down with the flu soon?

You may be capable of reducing your chances of getting sick by boosting your zinc intake. Some studies showed that zinc may reduce your chances of getting a cold.

A report published in the USA, stated that zinc can help lower the effects of cold by decreasing its severity and duration. The research was performed on a group of people who have flu less than a day taking a placebo and zinc lozenges after each two and half hours. They found that the cold symptoms took an average of 4.4 days for zinc users in comparison to 7.6 days for placebo users.

How does zinc work to prevent or reduce symptoms of a cold?

Minerals reach the parts of the body where the cold virus attacks, reducing the symptoms.

So, zinc basically works to prevent colds in their tracks. The zinc minerals reach parts of the body where the cold virus invades, reducing the effects of the cold.

Don’t overdo your zinc intake

Excessive intake of zinc may cause nausea, vomiting, lack of appetite, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and headaches. You should be careful to maintain zinc levels below 40mg daily unless your doctor suggests taking extra to treat a specific problem.

Zinc might reduce baldness

Zinc supplements can help you get your recommended daily dosage. As always, consult with your doctor to ask the right dose and frequency. If you want to enjoy a juicy steak then you can eat for a good purpose because consuming lean beef slices might help slow down the process of baldness.

Make sure you're getting enough zinc if you're over 40

Alopecia can define itself in different ways from thinning hair to baldness and can be caused by genetics or a lack of certain minerals. Zinc helps stimulate hair growth by improving the functioning of the immune system. According to research, guys who consume beef have fewer chances of being bald compared to those who eat other forms of meat (or no meat at all). Because beef is an amazing source of zinc and the deficiency of zinc may cause sudden hair loss.

Zinc supplements are also available for men who don’t consume a proper diet to prevent loss of hair. The recommended dose of zinc to stop hair loss is 50 to 100 mg daily. The supplement I recommend at the end of this article has 30mg of zinc oxide per serving. So, if baldness is a concern for you, then Prime Male Testosterone Booster could have double benefits – increasing your testosterone and helping you reduce baldness.

Zinc and alcohol

Studies found that deficiency of zinc in men may damage the liver due to the intake of alcohol. However, zinc supplements can help decrease this harm partly because it encourages enzymes that eliminate the alcohol.

Zinc helps to improve the liver’s antioxidant capacity, also increases the production of metal detecting compounds known as methotrexate or MT. Low MT levels put the liver at risk of possible injury. By maintaining the gastrointestinal tract methotrexate (MT) can help to reduce inflammation.

Furthermore, drinking alcohol can lower levels of zinc in the thyroid can lead to many medical problems such as reduced thyroid function and an increase in weight.

So, if you drink a fair bit of alcohol, this could be another reason to think about a zinc supplement. Ask your doctor about this to be sure.

Before drinking alcohol, take zinc

Even if you drink in moderation, studies show an extra 25 mg of zinc prior to drinking, can have beneficial effects and boost your liver health. Or, perhaps have a juicy steak or a plate of oysters with your beer.

Enhance your immune system with zinc

By maintaining a diet rich in vitamins and antioxidants, you can strengthen your immune system to prevent diseases and infections.

I take Acai and Blueberry supplements every day for this very reason. And the last time I was sick was December 1999. So, I’m clearly doing something right.

Plus, a new antioxidant I’ve just started taking is Moringa. Studies have shown Moringa has some huge health benefits for guys our age.  I wrote all about Moringa’s health benefits in a recent post. If you missed it, click the link below.

7 Health Benefits of Moringa to Lead a Productive Life

Your body generates free radicals that are harmful molecules and can spoil cells. Zinc can act as an antioxidant to help eliminate these free radicals that can be dangerous.

Researchers showed that when the balance between free radicals and antioxidants is disturbed, it can lead to cancer and cardiovascular disease, and age-related diseases. Specialists suggest adding coloured fruits and vegetables to your diets such as berries, lemons, kiwi, apples, red grapes, bananas, spinach, sweet potatoes, onions, and carrots.

And that’s why the GTW Power Shakes are so vital in your all-round health quest on the GTW Health and Fitness Lifestyle Program.

Zinc not only promotes the production of white blood cells that fight infection but also helps them to fight harder. It also stimulates cancer cells to fight cancer and helps white blood cells to produce more antibodies. Zinc raises the number of T cells that fight disease, especially in the holders, who are often facing a deficiency of zinc and have weakened the immune system.

Can Zinc reduce the risk of prostate cancer?

Zinc plays a vital role in supporting and enhancing prostate health. Scientists showed that prostate cancer cells have very little zinc than other healthy organ tissue. Zinc is found in all organs, tissues, and cells of human beings, however, in men, the prostate contains more zinc than any other tissue excluding bone.

Men reduce their physical activity as they get older their changes in diet frequently divest them of the suggested daily zinc. Men who are not able to get proper zinc levels from their diet have higher levels of prostate enlargement inflammation of the prostate gland. They are also more likely to get prostate cancer. Nuts are also an excellent source of zinc so eating a handful of nuts daily can help reduce the risks of prostate cancer.

Role of zinc in the thyroid gland

Zinc is an essential mineral that helps your brain produce thyroid hormones, or TRH, which in turn stimulates your pituitary gland to produce thyroid hormone (TSH). Failure to do so for guys our age, can lead to low testosterone levels. Several studies show, low levels of zinc are linked with lower T3 (active thyroid hormone), and less potential to convert T4 into T3.

The use of alcohol can make the condition worse. If you suffer from low thyroid symptoms and also taking alcohol then it might be wise to increase your zinc intake.

Zinc Improves Your Sexual Health and Testosterone Levels

Many in the know professionals call zinc ‘the most important sex mineral’. This is because zinc plays a huge role in your fertility, potency, sex drive and long-term sexual health.

Plus, zinc is important in sperm production. So, if a healthy sperm count is important to you, this could be another reason to make sure you’re getting enough zinc in your diet.

One study I read researched the effects of zinc on testosterone levels in guys around 30 to 60 I believe. They found that the young guys who restricted dietary zinc intake for 20 weeks experienced decreases in their testosterone. And the older guys who took a zinc supplement for six months experienced an increase in their testosterone levels.

That’s good news for you if you’ve already joined the GTW Health and Fitness Lifestyle Program. Or thinking of joining. Because, as you know, building a quality physique at any age is tough. Never mind for our age group.

And I don’t need to tell you that you don’t want to make it any harder than it already is, by having screwed up “lady level testosterone”.

That’s why I love the supplement you’ll find on the link at the bottom of this page. It has zinc as well as all the other ingredients which are perfect for guys our age on a high-intensity workout program.

Like I mentioned earlier, I’ve talked about the importance of boosting your testosterone at our age, and the potential issues if you don’t do something about it in these two recent posts.

These foods have Zinc

Your body doesn’t store zinc naturally, so it’s important to make sure you get enough in your daily diet, which is recommended to be 11 mg per day. You can get zinc from meat and poultry, and foods like oysters, beans, nuts, crab, lobster, whole grains, and dairy products.
